This portfolio introduces a new understanding of the
research essay for me, as English-Literature papers have never included the use
of primary sources. It is fitting that
this course uses primary literature, as it helps our understanding of the time period,
and the social changes that were going on.
I have done a couple courses in the Enlightenment time period, but that
by no means makes me an expert. I am
hoping to find more pieces on Anthropomorphism, as this practice is important
in both Western and other societies (religion and allegory). My normal research habits included going to
libraries and using essay databases to develop theses based on the evidence
produced by others. Though, I came up
with my own analysis, I did not venture into discovering primary sources to
create my own thesis. That is one of the
habits I would hope to change throughout this course, and start using primary documents
to develop a thesis.
That
being said, the largest issue that I have is my time management, and my ability
to procrastinate after the first step of research. I am good at going to the library and
searching, yet I falter at the analysis aspect of research. I tend to put that portion off until about a
week before the essay is due. This
causes countless problems with all of my essays. I’m hoping that the library session will help
change these habits, as the databases are not only helpful, but fun to search
through.
